FINAL CONVENTION UPDATE

Only one more week until the 49th annual NASCOE Convention in Omaha, Nebraska!

I thought I would give you another rundown of the scheduled events for Wednesday.  It’s not too late to sign up!  If you haven’t registered and are planning on participating in one of the tours, please send an e-mail to sherrys@futuretk.com so we have an accurate count.

Golfers will enjoy a tournament at Tiburon Golf Club. Tiburon was named The 2008 Golf Course of the year by Omaha Magazine.

A trip to Omaha is not complete without a trip to Omaha's internationally acclaimed zoological park. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo was named Best Zoo in America according to Reader's Digest, May 2004 edition.

Early morning is a great time to start your visit at Lauritzen Gardens - Omaha's Botanical Center. On this 100-acre site you will experience the beauty of a Victorian Garden, a rose garden, a bird sanctuary and a children's garden. Song of the Lark Meadow features native wildflowers and grasses. Housed within a large and beautiful Visitors Center are a floral exhibit hall, seasonal flower displays, local art hangings, a popular gift shop and a resource library.  Following your visit to Lauritzen Gardens, you will travel to the Strategic Air and Space Museum.

Baseball fans will have one of the last opportunities to experience Rosenblatt Stadium, soon to be former home of the College World Series (we are building a new stadium downtown).  Rosenblatt has been the home of the CWS for almost 60 years.  The Omaha Royals will be competing against Colorado Springs.  The price of the tour includes a hotdog and soda voucher and a Royals adjustable team hat.  You can also get half price burgers from Omaha Steaks!

Our final organized tour is a trip to Denison, Iowa to the Amaizing Energy Ethanol Plant .  Following that tour we will take you to Village Pointe shopping center for the afternoon with choices such as Kona Grill and Cheeseburger in Paradise for lunch and Cold Stone Creamery for dessert.  You can shop at a variety of places including Scheels, Sephora, Jos A. Bank, Ann Taylor and Yankee Candle.

People who might be coming early or staying late might want to experience some of the other highlights of Omaha.

The Joslyn Art Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate offering an impressive range of art work including permanent exhibits from Monet, Pollock, and Chihuly.

If you're in the mood for some bling, one word—Borsheim's, America's largest independent jewelry store, owned by Billionaire Warren Buffett. Another Buffett gem is Nebraska Furniture Mart. You won’t believe the size of this place!

The Omaha Children's Museum provides exposure to the arts and sciences through hands-on displays and activities. The museum has a Creativity Center and a Science and Technology Center.

The Old Market is a historic downtown neighborhood that has been hosting visitors and residents for over 30 years.  It is rich with unique shops, boutiques, pubs, restaurants, bookstores, bakeries, art galleries clothing stores and more. It is fun anytime of the day or evening, and a "must visit" on your agenda.  The Old Market is within walking distance of the hotel or the hotel shuttle will take you when they are not on an airport run.

Beautiful architecture blends with memories of a time gone by at the Durham Western Heritage Museum. Making its home in one of Omaha's most unique treasures, Union Station, The Durham Museum offers a fascinating look at the history of the region as well as offers broad-range of traveling exhibits covering subjects ranging from history and culture, to science, industry and more.

Wednesday evening we are going to have our own version of “Dancing with the Stars” followed by a visit from Elvis.  There will be a pasta bar for a mere $5 per person!

Thursday evening we will be raising money for our Scholarship fund with our annual Scholarship Auction.  After the auction is over, we will be dancing to “Average Joe”.

Friday is Hee Haw night.  Steve Stark has done a fabulous job building a set and tells me that we have around 10 Hee Haw Skits!  Come dressed in your favorite overalls and straw hats.  You may want to bring your video camera as well! Then we will taking Salsa Dancing Lessons with The Doedens.  We will again dance to “Average Joe”.

Saturday evening will end our convention with the “Field of Dreams”.  We have both chicken and steak on the menu.  We will be honoring our award winners and finish up the evening dancing to Cactus Hill.

If you haven’t been to a convention before you will be interested in knowing what goes on.  Thursday morning we will be welcomed by several different people. We will hear from our Administrator Teresa Lasseter and DAFO Steve Connelly.  We will also have several other speakers.  In the afternoon we will break into various Committee Meetings (to which anyone is welcome) and then Area Meetings (again anyone is welcome).

Friday morning we will hear from Bob Redding, Dennis Taitano (FSA Chief Financial Officer), John Johnson (DAFP) and Tom Hofeller (Associate Administrator for Operations and Management).  When we come back from break, it is our turn!  We have the opportunity to ask questions of the WDC personnel.  This is your opportunity to find out everything you always wanted to know about FSA but were afraid to ask!  Even if you don’t have a question you want to ask, someone else will and you can listen to the answer.

Friday afternoon we complete unfinished business in the Committee Meetings and Area Meetings.

Saturday morning we honor those NASCOE members who have passed away in the last year with a memorial presentation.  We will have reports from the various committees and our officers as well as RASCOE and NAFEC.  Finally we will elect NASCOE Officers for the upcoming year.

Those of you who are driving or renting a vehicle might want to know a few things about getting around in Omaha.  Dodge Street is the “dividing line” in Omaha.  Addresses such as N. 86th Street would be north of Dodge Street and S. 86th Street would be south of Dodge.  The numbered streets go north and south and start at the river with 1.  So, if you’re driving down Dodge Street and the numbers are getting smaller you’re going east!  If the numbers are getting bigger you’re going west!  Papillion and Ralston and Bellevue are south of Omaha.

Our hotel is on 16th and Dodge.  Click here to get directions.  If you don’t mind walking a short distance you can park for free at the Central City Garage which is located on 17th & Capitol Street.  Attendees just need to indicate to the booth attendant that you are with the NASCOE Convention.  If an attendant is not available, you would just need to park anywhere on floors 5 or 6.    Following is a map indicating its relation to the hotel.

Finally, there is a food court within a five minute walk of the hotel which will be open during the week.  If the weather’s bad there is an underground tunnel to get you there.  There are also several fast food places within a short walk of the hotel.

If anyone has any questions about anything that hasn’t been addressed here, feel free to e-mail me at ghall3@msn.com

BENEFITS  by: Becky Zirpel

Many of you have heard by now that Verizon is buying out Alltel.  They will become one company, but this will not take place for a few months.  They have many items to work out with a merger this large.  Many have questioned if our Cell Phone discount will still be honored?  I have no reason to think that we would not have a discount, quite the opposite with a merger this large our discount will remain, in fact you never now it may be better.   This is the unknown at this time, but when it is time we will send the info on the new and improved company and discounts.

Recently questions have come up about inviting J M Marketing to all NASCOE meetings or conventions.  When questions come up about a benefit that gives me a great opportunity to write an article in the NASCOE Now to help educate everyone on your benefits and how they work for you.

A GREAT REASON TO INVITE J. M. MARKETING
Have you ever had someone get hurt at your State, Area or National meeting?  How about if someone is hurt at a dance or in transportation to a social event, such as tours provided by your State, or at a Rally or any NASCOE function?   This is just one of the reasons you want to invite J. M. Marketing to your employee association’s event.  This must be done minimal of 2 weeks prior to the event so that Mr. Mace can attach a liability policy to the event.

For information purposes let me insert a small portion from the “NASCOE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE POLICIES” this gives you a little better understanding of an invitation.

NASCOE Liability Insurance through J.M. Marketing, (Not for Profit Organization Liability Policy)
A.      Individual Policy: This policy insures NASCOE in the event of a Wrongful Act, Employment Practice, Personal Injury or Publishers Liability committed by an Officer of NASCOE.  In the event that a lawsuit is filed against NASCOE and/or an officer the policy provides for defense costs and settlement not to exceed $1,000,000 per incident with a yearly limit of $1,000,000.  This policy has many benefit clauses and restrictions of coverage regarding officers’ operations.

B.      Events policy.  This policy is specifically for events sponsored by NASCOE or a state affiliate.  It provides NASCOE Officers and the Association coverage for each event. For example, the policy insures NASCOE against loss if a guest/member sustains an injury while attending an event or while being transported by NASCOE representatives to/from the event.

                                                                          I.      State Convention, Area Rally Coverage:  The host state MUST notify the Insurer at least 2 weeks in advance to add the event to the policy.  Many convention sites (Hotels) will require the events policy in order for NASCOE to hold the event at their property.  It is also important due to=2 0the fact that NASCOE holds many events off site of hotel.

II.      National Meetings and Conventions:  NASCOE must notify the insurer at least 2 weeks in advance to add the event to the policy.

More Great reasons for an invitation!
J  For JM Marketing to have time to provide information to the members on their insurance policy benefits
J  For money!  It is beneficial to your State in the tune of $100 all for the invitation and in addition if you           have a scholarship auction Mr. Mace generously donates to the auction.

  1. Opportunity for J. M. Marketing representative to discuss your policy with you or with people that may be interested in acquiring a new policy - It is sometimes very difficult in FSA to have a representative of J. M. Marketing visit our offices; so this is an excellent opportunity to allow membership to review their policies with JM Marketing and not in the office during hectic times.
  2. This benefit is a great tool to use when visiting with someone who has not become a member.
  3. Allows for your members to have a special enrollment period for certain policies during the meeting and for the following month (exclusive to your State).

It is part of your benefit packet to enjoy – don’t forget to invite J. M. Marketing
To your next convention or Association Meeting!
