Now that we have DSA’s over with, let’s get to work on other awards. I want to remind everyone of the Professional Improvement, Sick Leave, and Extra Mile awards. These are awards that can be submitted throughout the year. There are no deadlines for these awards.
Keep in mind, anyone receiving an award shall be “members of an affiliated association who is in good standing, serving under a permanent appointment, or voluntarily retired during the current year are eligible for these awards.
Professional Improvement Awards are for members who take advantage of educational opportunities outside the usual job requirements, but have a relationship to it. There is a minimum requirement of 20 hours of instruction. Accomplishments can be through short courses, correspondence courses, seminars, group research, reading, etc. Nominations can be submitted anytime throughout the year to your state’s awards chairperson who in turn submits them to the area. Any NASCOE member may submit an application or nominate another member.
Sick Leave Awards provide recognition for accumulated sick leave. States can obtain certificates for 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, and 2,500 hours of sick leave. For 3,000 hours or more, a plaque can be obtained through the area chairperson. Certificates are awarded at the state level.
Extra Mile Awards are for any member or their children who has gone the “extra mile” for their community, church, school, or their state, area, or national association. These awards can be made any time during the year by any member and there is no competition for this award.

2008 DSA Award Recipients
Herb Sorley, Awards Chairperson
It gives me great pleasure to announce our 2008 Distinguished Service Awards. It was a very competitive competition in each category this year. Our winners are from three different areas. I would be the first to congratulate each of them for their dedication, their devotion, and their willingness to work for the things that they believe in.
Our winner in the Service to Community category is Dawn Pindell from Canterbury, Connecticut in the North East Area. Dawn was nominated by Patricia Smith. With her background in agriculture, Dawn has a strong sense of support for her community and agriculture. Dawn has been the CED in Windham County since 1982. I would sum it up with, “Dawn is very involved in making her community a better place by volunteering wherever she sees a need.” Patricia put it very well when she stated that” Dawn is the perfect example of a true community servant.” Congratulations to Dawn Pindell, our 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipient for Service to Community.
Our winner in the Service to NASCOE category is Kay Yates from Washington, North Carolina in the South East Area. Kay was nominated by the Craven-Carteret FSA Office staff. Kay always finds the time to devote quality time to her state association, NoCASCOE, in addition to her job, her family, and her hobbies. Being outdoors, in her boat, with a fishing pole is most relaxing to Kay. Her staff says that their state association is a better organization due to her involvement. Her staff states that “she exhibits leadership skills, knowledge, compassion, and has given generously of her time and capabilities. Congratulations to Kay Yates, our 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipient for Service to NASCOE.
Our winner in the Service to FSA/Agriculture category is Steven Turner from Illinois in the Midwest Area. Steven was nominated by Sandra Fouts. Steven began his career as the youngest applicant to be interviewed and accepted into the COT program. Steven has also provided the base COT training for several trainees during his career. Steven has given of his time and knowledge working with the KCMO & Washington, DC with the price support programs, CRP training at the National level, and numerous other task forces. He is a third generation farmer to live in the Turner homestead and is actively engaged in farming. Congratulations to Steven Turner Turner, our 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipient for Service to FSA/Agriculture.
We will have the written nominations available for view on the NASCOE web site in the near future. The nominations will be available for viewing during the convention in Omaha also.
